Overwintering Potted Japanese Maples
Q: I have a Japanese Maple in a large pot. I understand it is risky trying to overwinter potted trees, shrubs and perennials in their pots outdoors. Once my tree is completely dormant and leafless, can I winter it over in the garage?
A: Yes. As long as you continue to monitor the soil moisture. Don’t let it go bone dry. This method will also work for other deciduous plants. However, evergreens or other plants that maintain some green leaves through the winter will require light to keep the plant healthy.
