Planting Trees in Fall
Q: I’ve noticed local nurseries have put their trees and shrubs and perennials on sale. Is it okay to plant this time of year?
Fall planting is a great strategy for establishing strong, healthy plants for next spring and to save a few bucks in the process. As temperatures cool and rainfall often increases, plants have the opportunity to establish their root systems before winter. Winter watering will be very important to the survival of your fall planted plants. Give them a good soak once a month from November through March as long as the soil is not frozen. Be sure to confirm with your nursery of choice if any warranties are included with plants on sale.
