Q:  I want to grow tomatoes and peppers this year.  Do I have to wait until the end of May to plant them outside?

Tomato protectors - Wall-o-Water

A:  There are ways to cheat the season by using protection devices and my favorite for individual plants like tomatoes is the Wall-O-Water or Dalen’s Insulated Plant Protector.  These devices will instruct you to set them up in mid to late April, and allow the soil to warm for a few days before planting in them.  The water will absorb heat during the day and release it at night, protecting your plants and keeping them warm, protected from wind and sub-freezing temperatures.
